What?! what is this??! and what about the billions that the US owes Canada for softwood just before Harper got elected that got skuttled… there were rulings there too …and the US did not obey… what is going on with this Harper guy? He’s giving up everything to the americans, the control securities decisions of our country, the very borders of our country, i.e., north, and this too! I mean, honestly… this guy is a mess…a mean mess… he should move south of the border and stop pretending he loves this country he does not choose to defend over doing anything to try to stay in power.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper responds to a question in the House of Commons on Tuesday. Prime Minister Stephen Harper responds to a question in the House of Commons on Tuesday. (Adrian Wyld/Canadian Press)Canada is not pleased with its recent loss on softwood lumber duties, but the government will follow the decision of an international trade tribunal.

“Canada will, of course, follow the rules and we will obey the decision,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper told the House of Commons during question period Tuesday.

The tribunal turned down Canada’s bid to pay a reduced fine for breaching the softwood lumber trade pact with the United States.

Canada had offered to pay $46.7 million US in compensation for shipping too much wood south of the border. Instead, it will have to pay $68 million US, as originally ordered last February by the London Court of International Arbitration.

“We are not pleased with the decision,” International Trade Minister Stockwell Day said, “but it is essential that we abide by it.”

Canada will have to impose export charges on softwood lumber destined for the U.S. until the full amount of the fine has been collected.

Tired of waiting for Canada to comply, the U.S. imposed its own duties last April on lumber imported from Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

at 6:55 PM ETMr. Gregory asks: “Isn’t it interesting that Hypocrite Harper will obey and international trade court, but won’t obey the courts in his own country?”
_________

Indeed. From the posts, it appears he gave away the (Canadian) store to the Americans. Maybe as some symbolic gesture. Who knows, except his inner circle and it isn’t talking?

But he’s a pro-business guy. You know, business growth equals jobs means re-election.

So old-school. And so misguided. I sometimes think there must be something else, like religion, that drives this man. And I shudder some more.

I’m not sure who crafted the deal (I think it was Trudeau) but whenever anyone suggests that the americans beat us at every negotiation, I remember fondly the early pictures from space when every time the Americans looked proudly at their orbiter, there was the Canadarm with its brilliant red on white logo. And if you listen to the folks at FOX network, they hate it. whooppee!

Who says we can’t win a negotiation?

Just maybe… the Canadarm should be giving the finger every once in a while when the Americans look at it!

Harper is a wimp that either just doesn’t care or doesn’t understand how Canada looks on the world stage when he deals with all sorts of international affairs. What a crying shame! To think that Canada was looked at with respect when it came to our handling of foreign affairs- not that long ago!

at 6:26 PM ETToo bad the Americans didn’t abide by the rulings when they were illegally charging duties on forest products. Instead, they just waited for a Harper government to come into power and sell the industry short in terms of compensation, and made concessions of the export levels. The Harper government is destroying the forest industry.

I don’t care if the Liberals are a mess or not; we’ve heard and read enough to have an idea already… TELL ME WHAT HARPER AND *HIS* GANG are thinking and doing for this country… Like him or not (and I don’t), HE’s the current leader… and if he hasn’t figured out that we keep getting a minority government because HE is in charge of his party, he is just too full of himself and personal ambition to do the right thing and step back to let someone else take over the reigns, be that in his own party or just to break the gridlock… It isn’t the other parties in power; it’s YOU, Mr. Harper — it is up to YOU to bring everyone together but you won’t because you’ve botched it and want to get to the Opposition side so you can blame the others for your blaring idiotic mistakes as well… no? prove me wrong. And you can pay all the reporters to write barely-nice-to-neutral stuff about you, it still won’t take away from the stench of your bullying ways…

Liberals “not in a mess,” leader insists

By PHILIP AUTHIER, THE GAZETTE September 29, 2009 7:02 PM

Federal Liberal party leader Michael Ignatieff is papering over cracks in his Quebec wing arguing things are not so bad.

“Let’s focus on the fundamentals,” Ignatieff said. “A party’s not in a mess when you’ve tripled the membership, when you’ve taken it from deficit to competitive financing with other parties.”

“In some ways I”m lucky to have the problems I have.

“We’ve had a little pushing and shoving. It’s not been the easiest week of my life. But frankly I’d rather have the pronlems I’ve got.”

Ignatieff made the comments on his way into a party fundraiser in Laval this evening.

This week he lost his Quebec lieutenant Denis Coderre in a dispute over the choice of candidates.

Details to follow.
